Dot Stickers and Index Cards
Step 1: Ask your child, “What do you imagine these dots could be?” Listen to their answers.
Step 2: Create these example cards ahead of time. Show your child these cards and say, “These are some things I imagine the dots could be. You can make the dots into whatever you like!”
Step 3: Give your child a few blank index cards and a sheet of dot stickers. You can also give some cards that already have stickers on them. Add in some markers, crayons, and pens.
Here are some things my 3 year old came up with. The possibilities are endless. You’ll notice that one of her completed cards has no stickers on it. That’s cool! The main point is that she’s creating, and if she veers off the path of the activity into a new creative zone, that’s awesome! I try not to interrupt the flow!
After she is done, I ask her to tell me all about her art. I make sure not to guess what she is drawing. That can be discouraging when I guess wrong. I simply ask “Can you tell me what you made?” Or “Tell me about this part.” She tells me little stories about each card. That’s how a love of writing begins! Her ideas, her stories, me listening.
